Omg I’ve always felt like the odd one out for not feeding into mindless doomscrolling and other modes of overconsumption. This just artfully articulates my way of life lol 💖✨thank you 💖✨

Great insight about the difference of semantic knowledge and participatory/perspectible knowing. How does it feel to write a great piece? How can I embody the epytome of the Writer? Those seem silly questions. They are not.

Exactly! Those questions help you dissect great art

Well said. I have two boys who are really into sports. They're always being told to "get their reps in." The more repetition, the more they'll improve. It's the same concept with creators - we just get our reps in in the form of consuming what it is we want to do! Thanks for this.

The other huge example that comes to mind is Stephen King. His list of just his favorite books that he has read in a single year is longer than most people's lifetime reading lists.

That's a fantastic example! It proves the thesis and what I was trying to say in the essay.

A teacher once told me that you better read atleast 50 short stories before writing one yourself. I believe Stephen King embodied that 🙌

100% agree. Over time, I’ve become so much more intentional with what I read or watch. If a book isn’t good, I drop it. Life’s too short to consume things that don’t actually feed you.

Exactly! I do the same. I give it 50-100 pages if it piques my interest somehow, but if it looses steam or doesn't really engage me, I drop it. I have been hooked to novels as long as 600 pages. So wordcount isn't the issue here afterall. It's taste and quality, isn't it

Great writing, very impactful. It was so fun to read that it ended too quickly for me, It would be more fun if it was longer, consisting some of your personal experiences.

Keep it up Singh ji!

i agree! but also one doesn’t only have to read to great writing. engaging with not so great content can also help you have more depth in the field.

Yes totally. There is also the other side. One needs to know what doesn't work to not try it themselves xD

But the reason why I'm talking about going back to good art is because of a tendency I've seen in people and in myself, which is that we end up chasing the new shiny thing only to regret it. So instead, maybe we can choose to revisit the classics instead of gobbling up every new piece of mediocre content.
